What is Qurbani?
Qurbani is the sacrifice of an animal for the sake of Allah (SWT).
Muslims around the world make an animal sacrifice on the 10th, 11th or 12th day of Dhul Hiijah to commemorate the obedience of the Prophet Ibrahim (AS). Allah (swt) asked Ibrahim (AS) to sacrifice his son Ismaeel (PBUH) and both surrendered to His (SWT) command. But before Ibrahim (PBUH) could obey, Allah provided a ram for slaughter instead.
Muslims follow the footsteps of Ibrahim (PBUH) by sacrificing a sheep, goat or cow and distributing the meat to the poor and needy. The Prophet (SAW) stated, “There is no deed that Allah (SWT) loves most on Eid ul Adha other than the slaughter of a sacrificial animal. The sacrificial animal will appear on the Day of Judgement with it’s horns, hair and nails as witness to the deed in the name of Allah. The blood of the sacrificed animal is placed near Allah (SWT). before it flows to the earth. Glad tidings to those who sacrifice”.
